Specialized Engineering Analysis

Engineering Analysis Service Delivery

As part of the project requirements, numerical models to enable the following engineering analysis were required to be both available and based on the latest as-built condition. These updated models were produced from modifying existing models and production of new models.

Motion Analysis

Models were developed using AQWA suite of hydrodynamic software, which enabled linear frequency domain and time domain motion analysis.

Mooring Analysis

Models were developed using both AQWA hydrodynamic package and FLEXCOM-3D (general purpose, nonlinear 3D FE software package) for static and time-domain dynamic analysis of mooring lines, flexible and rigid risers.

Stability Analysis

HECSALV and SEASAFE models were developed to models to enhance the Rapid Response Service capability.

Structural Analysis

ABS SafeHull software for the ship shaped FPSO assets and AQWA/ASAS and SACS for Semi-submersibles, were utilized as structural analysis tools on the project.

Materials and Corrosion Engineering

Whenever a material and an environment are brought together, there is a potential for degradation/corrosion. Such interactions are often highlighted in the more adverse environments, however, gradual deterioration in more benign circumstances can prove disruptive and costly, especially if it is not anticipated or costed for. The marine environment is perhaps the most severe. Typically the corrosion processes involve the deterioration of steel and reinforced concrete structures in environments of saline waters, variable temperatures and flow conditions.

Services:

  • Initial Assessment/Inspection

  • Recommendations for Detailed Testing/Analysis

  • Appraisal of Condition

  • Recommendations/Specification of Repair/Refurbishment Strategies

  • Assistance/Advice During Site Works

  • Maintenance, Inspection and Monitoring Schedules

  • Serviceable Life Estimates

  • Training (Corrosion basics through to refurbishment techniques)

The majority of corrosion control procedures are available for use by the engineer, however, it is the balance of these procedures in respect of the initial cost, inspection and maintenance regime that it the key to the correct implementation. The corrosion discipline is a fundamental tool in the risk based inspection/asset management program.

Evacuation Modeling

The team has experience in evacuation modeling using rule based analysis techniques as a design analysis tool. Such software permits the modeling of individual and group behavior within the layout of the installation and can take account of interaction with fire and smoke spread models.

Based on the results of the AIM Study, various consequences that have been identified, such as explosion and blast, can then be fed into the escape analysis with a variety of distributions of crew.

The analysis can then rank, based on escape time, a variety of vessel layouts in terms of escape routes, muster station and lifeboat locations. This will give the operator confidence that the optimum arrangement has been found in terms of crew safety.

Services:

  • Design Optimization for Escape using Computer Modeling.

  • Escape Calculations to IMO Resolution 757.

  • Consultation Regarding Sizing and Positioning of Escape Routes.
